Tops Markets is selling 12 of its supermarkets in the Adirondacks region to one of the largest food distribution companies in the nation.

C&S Wholesale Grocers, based in New Hampshire, is buying the Tops stores and will assume control of them in early 2006.

One of the supermarkets is in Hamilton. The others are in towns including Saranac Lake, Bolton Landing and Ausable Forks.

Retail analysts have mentioned C&S as a possible suitor of The Penn Traffic Co.'s warehouses in Syracuse. Penn Traffic continues to operate its own warehouses, which distribute groceries to its supermarkets, including P&C Foods, and independent grocers.
