Widespread illegal cultivation of genetically modified (GM) crops is threatening farmers and the economy in Romania, the environmental group Greenpeace alleged on Monday.

The claim was supported by a former general manager of biotechnology giant Monsanto in Romania, who warned that the authorities had lost control over GM organisms in the country.

But the accusations were rejected by Romania's ministry of agriculture, reports AgraFood East Europe.
