Dell, whose vaunted direct sales model, competitive prices and sometimes free delivery has made it the powerhouse it is, is going to stop delivering low-end gear to the homes of its many consumer customers on October 10 unless they pay extra.

Instead, consumers will have to go to their local post office to pick the parcels up.

The cost-cutting move follows Dell's poor showing its last quarter out, when it missed a beat because of ill-advised price cuts it felt it should make due to the competitive environment.

Dell is also trying to get to $80 billion in revenues a year and has more than another $20 billion to go.
