Three organ transplant recipients were infected with West Nile Virus (WNV) by their common New York City donor in late August and two remain in comas more than a month after their transplant. A fourth recipient apparently was not infected.
The organ donor was hospitalized at New York University Medical Center on August 23 after a serious head injury resulting from a bicycle accident. On August 28th, the man's liver, one lung and two kidneys were transplanted into four patients - three in New York City hospitals, and another at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
