While the story of post-war cinema would be significantly less interesting without Michael Caine, it is remarkable how few of the hundred or so films he has made deserve serious consideration.

Take away his defining roles of the mid-Sixties (in Zulu, Alfie, The Ipcress File), his never-better performance in Get Carter (1971) and a couple of spectacular turns in the Eighties (Dressed To Kill, Mona Lisa), and the Caine CV is a roster of the dud, the bad and the unreleasable.
