The white truffle from which the shampoo gets its name is one of the world's most extravagant luxuries. Served by the ruling families of Renaissance Italy as a statement of their wealth, it became a symbol of opulence among the courts of Europe and remains coveted as one of the earth's rarest delicacies.

The truffle, which cannot be cultivated, grows only in the roots of trees in woodland surrounding Alba, in the Piedmont region of Italy. It is harvested by the trifolau (the local name for truffle hunters) and their sniffer dogs between October and December, and sells for [pounds sterling]2,300 a pound. ...
