In 1963, at age 16, pianist Andre Watts was selected by conductor Leonard Bernstein to perform Franz Liszt's E-flat Piano Concerto at Lincoln Center with the New York Philharmonic for a nationally broadcast "Young People's Concert."
The young Watts' performance was obviously impressive, because three weeks later Bernstein called upon Watts to fill in at the last minute for the ailing pianist Glenn Gould on one of the New York Philharmonic's regular subscription concerts.
