A new groundfish management plan promises to slow the pace of the rockfish harvest for trawlers in the central Gulf of Alaska.
Though the plan is in its pilot stages it should crimp the flow of product across the docks. And that should translate into new markets and higher ex-vessel prices for fishermen.
Species listed for management under the new program include thornyhead, rough-eye, shortraker, Pacific Ocean perch and a smattering of other rockfish species: dusky, widow, yellowtail, black and blue rockfish; The new plan will also include provisions for traditional harvest levels of incidental blackcod and Pacific cod.
