THE Texas Gulf coast braced for catastrophic damage to energy production and export shipping with Hurricane Rita due on shore last Saturday morning.
The second devastating storm came just as the recovery of rural areas of Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana--as well as grain exporting activity at New Orleans, La.--began a tortured recovery from Hurricane Katrina.
Farms in Mississippi as far as 180 miles inland from the Gulf continue to dig out from the ravages of the storm.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated crop and livestock losses from Katrina at $800 million, but that does not include damage costs to buildings and infrastructure.
