US consumers do not understand qualifying statements that use only words to convey the strength of science underlying health claims for conventional foods or dietary supplements, a survey by the US Food and Drug Administration has found.

The researchers selected four hypothetical dietary substance/ disease relationships - calcium/osteoporosis, omega-3 fatty acids/heart disease, selenium/cancer and lycopene/cancer - to represent a range of scientific certainty.
