The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 resulted in the independence of 15 new countries. One of the smallest and also among the most remote from Moscow was the newly named Kyrgyz Republic (known as Kirghis Soviet Socialist Republic during Soviet times). Also commonly known as Kyrgyzstan, it declared its independence on 31 August of 1991. The country was largely unprepared in its newfound status. In fact, the majority of the people had a rather benevolent view of the event, though it did not take long for nationalistic feelings to surface.
