Lake County residents now have an easier way to trace their family roots thanks to a large genealogical volunteer project led by a Lake Villa Boy Scout.
For his Eagle Scout project, Cameron Bay, 13, organized a group of volunteers this summer who photographed headstones and grave sites at Lake Villa and Antioch township cemeteries for the Lake County Genealogical Society.
The group of about 25 volunteers spent hundreds of hours studying headstones, clearing and cleaning them of debris and photographing them. In the end, they produced more than 5,000 digital photos of headstones.
