Last week, the U.S. laid an aggressive proposal on the table to help jump start the ag portion of the Doha Round of world trade talks. The global talks will clearly come into play as U.S. lawmakers write the 2007 farm bill, but (don't worry too much) U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman and USDA Sec. Mike Johanns stress the next U.S. farm bill will be written at home, not in Geneva.
What the U.S. proposes
MARKET ACCESS, DEVELOPED COUNTRIES: Cuts of 55% to 90% for tariffs. Lowest tariffs would be cut 55%, with cuts ranging up to 90% for the highest tariffs.
