Oct. 27--CAPE ST. GEORGE -- Water dealt the final blow to the Cape St. George Lighthouse, which until last week had survived hurricanes, wars and the test of time.
The 158-year-old landmark tumbled into the gulf last Friday afternoon, finally succumbing to the powerful combination of shifting sand, relentless waves and generations of vicious storms on the tiny island south of Apalachicola.
Now a small group of lighthouse supporters has vowed to keep fighting for the landmark, moving forward this week with plans to potentially salvage and rebuild the light that had for so long withstood the march of history.
