To say that the mobile communications industry was surprised when a suit was filed in Florida this past winter would be a huge understatement. The suit alleged that a woman had died from a brain tumor caused by her use of a cellular phone.
Press coverage of the story was intense, and it set off a flurry of activity in Congress, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In response, about all the major manufacturers and mobile industry trade associations could do was to issue announcements that attempted to allay the public's fears.
