The security forces have maintained the intensity of their campaign against armed Islamists, with daily shoot-outs being reported in various parts of the country.
The latest phase in the government offensive started on 9-10 March with a series of attacks on Islamist meeting places, resulting in at least 23 people being killed. On 17 March, security forces carried out attacks on suspected Islamist hide-outs in Asyut, killing at least 10 alleged militants. The police claim that among the dead was Ahmed Zaki, accused of having led the recent Islamist campaign against tourists in Upper Egypt.
