The Emir of Abu Dhabi since Nov. 2, 2004 and President of the UAE since Nov. 3, Shaikh Khalifa had become crown prince in 1969. But Shaikh Khalifa does not play a hands-on role in the affairs of state or in the petroleum sector, although none of the decisions pertaining to Abu Dhabi's oil or gas can be taken without his approval. He still heads the Supreme Petroleum Council.
