The Emir of Abu Dhabi since Nov. 2, 2004 and President of the UAE since Nov. 3, Shaikh Khalifa had become crown prince in 1969. But Shaikh Khalifa does not play a hands-on role in the affairs of state or in the petroleum sector, although none of the decisions pertaining to Abu Dhabi's oil or gas can be taken without his approval. He still heads the Supreme Petroleum Council.

Over the years, Shaikh Khalifa has managed to function in a way which does not create friction within the decision making structures of Abu Dhabi or the UAE. He delegates power. But, according to rumours, Shaikh Khalifa has been alarmed to see his half-brother Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Zayed ...
