"A party! A party!" the forest animals whispered as they scurried toward the clearing.
Everyone was bringing something good to eat. Chipmunk's basket overflowed with nuts and berries. Rabbit's basket bulged with crunchy orange carrots. His feet went Thump! Thump! Thump! as he hopped along.
Small Mouse scampered across a blanket of patchwork leaves. "But, Mama," he asked, "whose party is it?"
"The party is for Old Raccoon," his mother whispered. "Now hush." Her tiny eyes checked for danger before she dashed to a nearby berry bush. Small Mouse followed closely behind her.
From somewhere in the rustling trees came an owl's haunting call. ...
