In the early 1990s, Donna Ladd lost three family members--her mother, stepdad and brother. The loss temporarily paralyzed her, and she needed time to work through the grief.
"When my mother died, I was in the first year of a small newspaper that I started in Manhattan, and the pain decimated my entrepreneurial drive and caused me to cease publication at a time when I could have turned a major corner, businesswise," said Ladd.
