Dr. Leonard Jeffries, chairman of the Black studies department at City University of New York who was demoted for making ethnically biased remarks, recently was awarded $400,000 in damages by a federal jury in New York.
The jury ordered CUNY officials to pay the amount to Jeffries for violating his free speech rights when he was removed as chairman of the Black studies department at the college after he made a speech widely censured as anti-Semitic (JET, May 31).
