SAN FRANCISCO -- The Salton Sea Authority is developing plans to use municipal bonds to finance preservation of the Salton Sea for recreation, wildlife habitat, and development.
The inland lake in Southern California has existed since the breach of a Colorado River levee in 1905 sent floodwaters into the sub-sea level Salton Sink.
Because it is below sea level, the lake has no outlet; in the sea's century-long history it has been sustained with runoff from agriculture in Riverside and Imperial counties.
