THE death of the much-loved racehorse Best Mate at Exeter earlier this week had many of the hallmarks of a national tragedy. Racegoers wept openly at the news and his passing featured on the front pages of many of yesterday's newspapers.
It might seem extraordinary to anyone unfamiliar with British life that the death of an animal could generate such emotion, but Best Mate was no ordinary horse.
