Nov. 4--After more than three decades as the face of the Chicago Urban League, civic leader James Compton announced on Thursday that he is stepping down as head of the 89-year-old organization, triggering a nationwide search for a successor.
"As much as I have enjoyed and loved this job, you have to also be realistic enough to admit that someone else may in fact be able to do it better," Compton said from the organization's headquarters at 4510 S. Michigan Ave.
"This is not a divine-right monarchy, and it's not a family-owned business," he said.
