In American school studies, relevance of content and an underlying theme of citizenship are critical factors. This is also the case in Africa, including in Somalia. Social studies featured prominently in a special Nomad Education Program designed to meet the needs of the largely nomadic population and to address national development goals for creating a national identity and sense of citizenship in all Somalis. This program is the focus of this article.
