The House of Representatives, by a vote of 331-90, passed the Federal Housing Finance Reform Act of 2005, (H.R. 1416). Among other things, the bill establishes an Affordable Housing Fund, a new source of funding for cities for the construction and rehabilitation of affordable homes.
Under the bill, as part of their affordable housing goals set by Congress, housing finance giants Fannie Mac, Freddie Mac and the Federal Home Loan Banks will contribute 3.5 percent of their annual profits to the fund for the first two years and 5 percent of their profits for the next three years.
