Already a distinguished American statesman when the war began, Benjamin Franklin attended the Albany Congress of 1754 as a delegate from Pennsylvania. This meeting brought together representatives of the seven colonies north of the Potomac River and 150 members of the Six Nations of the Iroquois League. King George II of England wanted to make peace with the Indians.

At this gathering, Franklin proposed a "Plan of Union" to encourage cooperation among the colonies.
