In 1497, John Cabot, a Venetian explorer sailing on behalf of the British Crown. explored the coast of Newfoundland and perhaps Cape Breton Island (in the present-day province of Nova Scotia). Although Cabot never established a permanent colony, England had staked her claim in Canada. Not far behind was Jacques Cartier, a Frenchman who explored the St. Lawrence River in 1535, sailing as far west as an area he named Mont Real (modern-day Montreal). He claimed "New France" for the French monarch, Francis I. He also was the first to use the name Canada, a word probably derived from the Indian term for "village."
