This study examines the various external, moderating and internal factors that may influence the implementation of an environmental management system within a limited sample of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Both formal and informal environmental management systems were considered within this study. The results indicate that age, customers, and employees' concerns were significantly associated with the informal level of implementation of an environmental management system.
