The race to buy Boots Healthcare International (BHI) has been won by Reckitt Benckiser, which bought Boots' over-the-counter, non-prescription medicines business for 1.93bn [pounds sterling]--a considerable result for the Nottingham company. Analysts originally estimated Boots would sell BHI, which includes brand names like Strepsils throat lozenges and Nurofen painkillers, for 1.2bn [pounds sterling].
However the deal won't be properly screwed down until it has survived the gimlet eye of competition authorities, who will want to ensure Reckitt, the maker of Dettol antiseptics, won't be handed a stranglehold on product range, potentially killing off competition.
