Residents in Woodbury and Eden Prairie voted green in Tuesday's election.
Like voters in many fast-growing suburban cities here and across the country, they responded to requests for increased spending to provide recreation areas and save land from development.
In Woodbury, a $9 million initiative to preserve open space passed by an overwhelming margin. "Everyone wins with a deal like this," said Jim Gay, who headed the committee campaigning for the initiative. "Preserving open space enhances property values."
In Eden Prairie, a city that's already 92 percent developed, voters approved three of four park proposals.
