Recession is keeping foreign insurers at home. (International Life & Health Insurance Report)

The slow worldwide economy has caused foreign insurers to decrease their US investments since 1992. Many European insurers have needed the additional capital for their domestic operations, however, prospects in the US are strong and may entice future investment. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) could provide insurers with a US-based unit access to three markets and could create an increase in assets for insurers. Industry observers expect to see foreign companies acquiring US companies or setting up US branches to take advantage of NAFTA.
