Chris Carpenter joined two select groups and completed an ascent that was swift and sublime Thursday when he was named the winner of the National League Cy Young Award.
The St. Louis Cardinals right- hander received 19 of 32 first-place votes and 132 points in balloting by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Florida Marlins left-hander Dontrelle Willis was second, with 11 first-place votes and 112 points.
It was the closest NL Cy Young vote since 1998, when Tom Glavine (99 points) edged Trevor Hoffman (88).
