When I measure the new Catechism solely against current theological and catechetical criteria, I find some things to be desired. I am grateful for Lawrence S. Cunningham's insightful and balanced assessment (Commonweal, March 12, 1993) for he captured many of my own reactions, especially concerning the Catechism's need to make more use of contemporary biblical scholarship.
I have, however, another measuring stick. Like the great majority of Catholics who have passed their fortieth birthday, I was reared on the Baltimore Catechism. When I compare the current offering with this relic of my youth, I find some things for which to be thankful.
