Although spinal-cord injury (SCI) can have a profound effect on sexual functioning, other medical conditions can further complicate your ability to be sexually active. As life expectancy with SCI continues to improve, it's not uncommon for individuals with SCI to have other medical problems often associated with aging. These may include hypertension, coronary artery disease, obesity, and diabetes.
In past columns, I have discussed the impact of depression, prostate cancer, brain injury, fatigue, and smoking on sexual desire, erections, and other aspects of sexual functioning. In this month's column, we explore the relationship of diabetes to sexual functioning.
