The KIDS COUNT National Data Book: State Profiles of Child Well-Being, is published each year by the Annie E. Casey Foundation (http://www.aecf.org). In this publication, all fifty states are ranked from best to worst. The 2005 National Data Book, based on 2002/2003 data, ranked South Dakota 21st (of 50 states) in child well-being.
The national composite rank for each state is obtained by converting the numerical values for each of the 10 indicators into standard scores. The standard scores are added to provide a total standard score for each state. States are ranked on the basis of their total standard score in sequential order from highest (best) (1) to lowest ...
