Recreational boaters who have, to date, remained relatively free of federal scrutiny in the post 9/11 era may soon be the target of government watchdogs, according to a report by the Associated Press.

Following an address to the U.S. Maritime Security Expo in New York City in late September, the Commandant of the Coast Guard, Adm. Thomas Collins, noted that a new National Maritime Security Plan had been presented to President Bush and that "among the Coast Guard's targets are recreational boats, an estimated 110,000 fishing vessels and ferries that carry commuters and tourists."
