November 7, 1989--L. Douglas Wilder, politician, became the first Black elected state governor in U.S. history when he was elected governor of Virginia on this day. The former Lieutenant Governor won a hotly contested race against his republican rival, Gen. J. Marshall Coleman. Wilder garnered 50.1 percent of the vote to 49.8 percent for his opponent. The voter turnout was 66 percent, a state record for a non-presidential election. Wilder served in the position from 1990 to 1994. State law prohibits Virginia governors from serving a second term.
