US drug majors Schering-Plough and Merck & Co have commenced patient enrollment in a large-scale clinical study, IMPROVE-IT (Improved Reduction of Outcomes Vytorin Efficacy International Trial), with their co-developed Vytorin (ezetimibe and simvastatin). This will evaluate the effectiveness of Vytorin compared to Zocor (simvastatin) alone in treating around 10,000 high-risk patients with coronary artery disease presenting with acute coronary syndromes. In clinical trials to date, the firms say that Vytorin has been shown to be superior to both Pfizer's Lipitor (atorvastatin) and Zocor.
