It's easy to find things wrong with how TV news has conducted itself in the past quarter-century. But with Ted Koppel ready to sign off next week as anchor of ABC's "Nightline,'' it's worth taking note that here is one show that has consistently got it right.

ABC deserves a pat on the back for offering an alternative to the entertainment-oriented gabfests in the 11:30 p.m. slot all these years. But the network also deserves a gentle nudge in the right direction as it contemplates what to do with that slot after Mr. Koppel and executive producer Tom Bettag make their exit Nov. 22.
