WASHINGTON _ When Rep. Roy Blunt catapulted into the No. 2 House leadership job earlier this fall, one of his colleagues quickly noted that it wasn't guaranteed to be a good career move.
"It cuts both ways," Deborah Pryce, R-Ohio, chair of the GOP conference, said of Blunt's temporary ascension to House Majority Leader, replacing Rep. Tom DeLay after the Texas Republican's September indictment.
Indeed, Blunt has taken the temporary reins at a tumultuous time for House Republicans, who have been rocked by ethical troubles, spiraling public approval ratings, and internal GOP warfare.
