DALLAS _ This is why you don't bench Erick Dampier.
This is why Avery Johnson stands by his center when others are ready to throw him under the bus.
A 119-82 victory over Detroit was a reminder of how much an active Dampier means to the Mavericks. His 16 points, 14 rebounds and two blocked shots is the sort of performance that allows this team to be discussed among the league's elite.
"When he's playing like he did tonight," forward Josh Howard said, "we can't be beat."
