THE CONFERENCES THAT HAVE MARKED THE 800TH anniversary of the death of Maimonides have examined and assessed the many aspects of his thought and achievement. Scholarly books follow in their wake, including Herbert Davidson's encompassing Moses Maimonides, the Man and his Works. This is thus an appropriate moment to consider the range and impact of his unique contribution to Jewish life and culture.
Today we speak of Maimonides in magisterial terms. It is important, however, to situate him in the controversies of his day, and follow his thought processes along the different roles he pursued.
