On Nov. 11, 1918, the guns fell silent on the battlefields of Europe, ushering in a new era. For the soldiers who emerged from the trenches on both sides, the landscape of Europe, Asia and the Middle East had changed forever.
No longer was there an Ottoman Empire, an Austrian-Hapsburg Empire or a greater Germany. Britain and France were devastated both financially and emotionally, and 4.8 million American citizens found themselves wearing the uniform of the United States.
