The Philippine Army said yesterday that its troops killed nine New Peopleas Army (NPA) rebels in a firefight in barangay San Agustin, Palo, Leyte, yesterday.

Army spokesman Maj. Bartolome Bacarro said initial reports reaching Army headquarters at Fort Bonifacio confirmed that the firefight started at about 5 a.m. yesterday after elements of the Armyas 19th Infantry Battalion in an open field to check the reported presence of the armed rebels in the area were fired at by insurgents.

Bacarro also said that six suspected rebels were wounded during the firefight while nine other suspected NPA rebels were captured. No ...
