Nov. 20--Studded tires and winter bicycle gear, diamonds and food gift packs are among the hot choices for Alaskans in the holiday shopping season that is now just warming up.
While the proof will be what happens between the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas, area merchants are generally very optimistic.
Mike Herzog, a manager at Recreational Equipment Inc. in Anchorage, said holiday shoppers are already looking for special bike headlamps for winter commuting, plus head-to-toe storm weather gear for themselves, including pogies and overboots.
