Nov. 21--In the land of free enterprise, companies often try to suppress competition by making employees sign non-compete agreements.

But, as one recent Texas court ruling shows, even seemingly clear-cut violations of agreements often are viewed as acceptable in court.

Non-compete agreements limit an employee from using one company's private information to benefit another. They ballooned in popularity in the 1990s when the tech boom sparked poaching of employees and numerous start-up businesses.
