AT THE BANLUNG MARKET IN Northern Cambodia, vendors in mud-splattered stalls sell everything from ducklings to sneakers to detergent. Schab Ga, 23, examines a pink bra as though it is the world's most bizarre invention. She turns it over slowly in her hands, tugs the lacy fabric, then cups it over her breasts to check the fit, oblivious to onlookers. "I don't see the point," she says, frowning. "It looks very uncomfortable." Nevertheless, Ga buys the bra. After all, she has spent more than two decades living in the remote Cambodian jungle, cut off from civilization. Lacy pink lingerie may seem utterly useless, but Ga is determined to adapt to modern life.
