WASHINGTON -- Offer pacifiers to all infants up to 1 year of age when putting them on their backs to sleep to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, according to an updated policy statement from the American Academic of Pediatrics.
Six studies found pacifier use significantly lowers sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) risk, John Kattwinkel, M.D., said at the American Academy of Pediatrics annual meeting (Pediatrics 2005;116:e716-23; www.pediatrics.ors/cgi/doi/10.1542/peds. 2004-2631).
