IF a company wants to name its brined, white cheese feta, it must be produced in Greece if the firm wants to sell it in Western Europe, the European Union's Court of Justice ruled Oct. 25.
The court threw out objections raised by Denmark and Germany after the European Commission conferred a "protected designation of origin" (PDO) status on the name feta in 2002, restricting its use to a particular cheese type manufactured in Greece.
The Greek agriculture ministry called the court's decision "historic," adding that it would make it easier for domestic industry to market its cheese.
