In the early morning light of Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the Louisiana coast as a Category 4 storm. The storm was massive, and the effects were widespread.

The estimated storm surge of 27 feet is analogous to a watery bulldozer that removed or damaged much of the infrastructure and landmarks south of Interstate 10 on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Hurricane-force winds were experienced as far inland as 150 miles.
